Sorrentine Peninsula and Amalfi Coast in a nutshell
The peninsula of Sorrento, with its luxuriant Mediterranean vegetation and its
cliffs with sheer drops down to the glittering blue sea, presents you with one
of the most breathtaking panoramas in the whole of Europe. It is in this happy
strip of land that you will find Amalfi Coast (also called Land of Mermaids),
Positano, Ravello and Sorrento. Here, the white painted houses are set out over
flights of steps on the slopes of a valley, opposite the sea and amid the strong
colours of its very beautiful gardens where the lemon tree is king. The Green
Island of Ischia with its beautiful sandy beaches and its thermal hot springs,
and fashionable Capri, meeting point of the international jet set, with its
steep rocky coastline and its famous “piazzetta”, provide the best illustration
of the Italian “DOLCE VITA”.
Amalfi Coast is situated half way between the Vesuvius Volcano and the Islands
of Capri and Ischia, and it has something of the danger of the one, and the
romance of the others. Perhaps this is why people come here to get married.
Amalfi Coast is a living and pulsing painting. It embraces you with its
brilliant heart-rending beauty, and you become part of the incredible, moving
feast that is Amalfi Coast.
When you are actually here, you will immediately realise that even the most
distracted traveller who seeks only hurried sensations and momentary beauty,
cannot avoid being permeated by the millenary soul of Amalfi Coast, and by the
magnificent combination of spectacular nature, art and tradition. The sheer
verticality of the coast is bewildering and awesome: high cliffs shattering down
for hundreds of meters to the grand Mediterranean at their feet, so tempting and
seductive. The sea-sky are so intensely blue, that you cannot always tell where
the one begins and the other leaves off. The cheerful colours of its romantic
private gardens where the Lemon Tree is king, the delicate scent of the
Mediterranean shrubs and flowers, the white or honey-coloured village houses
clinging to cliff sides, all this beauty is dazzling. Amalfi looks like a mirage
of colours inundated by sunshine and embraced by the seducing Mediterranean. Now
that you are actually here, you begin to understand why every single traveller
has fallen in love with Amalfi Coast. Driving along the spectacular contours of
this dramatic coast, past little terraced hillside village gardens and small
towns clinging to high, ivory-pale cliffs as they plunge into the sea, is an
unforgettable experience with an intense emotional impact.
