Sardinia in a nutshell:
Sardinia is
a dream island, situated in the centre of the Mediterranean Sea. The
intense feelings its natural beauty arouses in the visitor cannot be
erased. With its coasts extending for 1800 km, Sardinia represents
one of the most coveted destinations for sea life lovers and water
sports fans, and its ancient, off-coast villages and towns, proudly
exhibit their traditional way of life, and offer their ancient
monuments, their lovely local handicraft production and their
exquisite foods and wines.
The crystal-clear sea waters of this fascinating island, and its
long immaculate sandy beaches, alternating with inlets, are just
enchanting. Impressive black Lava rocks, shaped by the wind along
the centuries, interrupt here and there the breath-taking coast, and
strongly contrast with the candour of the white sand. What’s more,
here you CAN find SILENCE. The silence of secluded, unspoilt beaches
extending for kilometres. David Herbert Lawrence wrote “ Sardinia
does not resemble any other place “, and the title of Writer
Marcello Serra’s novel “Sardinia, almost a continent” is evocative
and self explanatory. It is also unique, because it is the end
result of a sequence of foreign dominations, and the outcome of
their interaction with the local culture and traditions.
Places to be seen:
With its 1800 km long coasts, the Island has less than 300
kilometres of urbanised, modern tracts. Human intervention here has
been very delicate, almost imperceptible. The Island jealously and
tenaciously abides by its millenary traditions, and peacefully
co-exists with the comfort and luxury of modern times. It is
possible, therefore, to avoid the jet set areas, get off the beaten
tracks and discover all the shades of this “blue palette” embracing
the Island. One can explore Gallura , the archipelago of La
Maddalena, Capo Testa, Santa Teresa, Emerald Coast, Golfo Aranci,
Olbia, Tavolara, Molara, Cagliari, Stintino, Capo Caccia and the
unparalleled colours of the sea at La Pelosa Beach. One can also
enjoy an excursion to Asinara, the forbidden Island, and spend a day
at the virgin beaches of San Teodoro and Budoni. The list of places
which MUST be seen is endless: Siniscola, Orosei, Cala Gnoe, Baunei
(Ogliastra), where at the very edge of the sea, grows one of the
last coastal forests in Europe. The Island is mainly mountainous in
the centre, and there are 4 large gulfs along the coastline: The
Gulfs of Cagliari, Oristano, Orosei and Asinara. Some of Sardinia’s
most enchanting cliffs are between Nevida and Masua (Cagliari), on
the “Griffons Coast”, between Bosa (Nuoro) and Alghero(SS) and in
the Orosei Gulf. Sand Dunes, which date back to one million years,
are truly fascinating. Above all, when in the Alghero area, the
wonderful view and the sunset over the Gulf of Porto Conte, and the
Caves of Neptune with their stalactites and stalagmites are not to
be missed.
But Sardinia is not only a jewel of natural beauty, it also offers
its NURAGHI and its ROMANESQUE CHURCHES, the archaeological sites of
ancient Punic-Roman Cities, the Necropolis of Santu Pedru and of
Anghelo Ruiu. The ramparts that surround ancient towns, the tower of
Esperò Reial and the Fortress of Magdalena, the Cathedral of Santa
Maria and the church and cloister of St. Francesco, all well worth
the time you will dedicate to them. The Phoenician ruins, the
Castles of Montiferru, of Eleonora d’Arborea, of Acquafredda, of
Serravalle and of Malaspina , are other places not to be missed.
And, when in the Alghero area, do not miss the wonderful view and
the sunset over the Gulf of Porto Conte, and the Caves of Neptune
with their stalactites and stalagmites.
In very few other places it is possible to experience such strong
sensations and feelings which the superb nature of Sardinia arouses
in every visitor. No wonder the international jet set is at home in
Sardinia: This fascinating and mysterious land, with its crown of
little islands of varying size, and its innumerable, emerald-green
lagoons along its coasts, attracts international VIPs on board their
billion dollars yachts.
The Island’s climate is just right at every season: Its clear summer
months extend from May to September, and Spring and Autumn seduce
you with their nicely warm weather after the crowded peak summer
months are over.
Sporting activities and entertainment:
Besides Diving (diving centres are located in Cagliari, Nuoro,
Oristano and Sassari) and Golf (Molas Golf Club, is an 18 hole golf
course), one can go Mountain biking, sailing, fishing, swimming,
snorkelling, surfing, trekking, and much more. For night life
lovers, there are plenty of Caffè pubs, night clubs and discotheques
in all main coastal cities.
Truly, Sardinia can easily compete with the most beautiful tropical
coasts on earth. This Island is a “world” of its own, one of a kind.
